The Greek goddess Hekate (or Hecate) holds a few epithets. One of which is Hekate Phosphorus, the torch-bearer. The goddess holds a key to the underworld and according to the mythology, she is the one who lights up the way for Demeter, the goddess of harvest, to bring her daughter, Persephone, back to Earth after living in the underworld with Hades half of the year. The black dog is often attributed to the image of Hekate, as depicted in a lot of archeological artefacts related to the goddess.
